1913 softcover1st edition thus THE HUDSON Three Centuries Of History Romance and Invention Wallace Bruce 4 LONG MAPS are in excellent conditionBryant Union PublishersIllustratedpacked nicely for youOwner’s stamps: WORTH H. STORKE, Manassas, VirginiaI did a deep dive of research into WorthH. Storke’s family and life. he was a clerk for the Virginia Satet Supreme court and his ancestors, maned William LYNN or LYNNE were patriots of the American Revolution. I printed out the papers as you see in the photos and I will include them in the package. Those include links and images. When you buy the book i will send you a few files as well, a nice PDF from the Virginia court and other stuff. below are my ROUGH notes – minus links and images. Have fun! Maps are in excellent condition. Book is G+ to VG Minus. There are some repairs. Some edge tears have been repaired with lineco strips and the cover/spine has been shored up as shown with strips that have been colored green with a sharpie. The previous owner, Worth H. Storke has his ink stamp inside as shown. (More about him below and his family tree). There is 1 small hole in the back cover as shown covered over with a strip and colored green. The far edges of the last 2 pages have some minor wear. Basically, its a nice readable book with a worn cover and some minor repairs but the maps are amazingly well-preserved. 90%of the pages are excellent as you can see, and the ones that have problems are not too bad at all but because of the repairs and the cover issues I could not very well make the VG grade on this book. Lt William Linn (Lynn) link at the connecticut society William Linn, son of Alexander and Mary Linn, was born at Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut on 31 December 1755. William Lynn had a brother, David Lynn, who served under him in the Revolutionary War. He also had a sister who in 1831 lived in a remote part of Middlesex County, Connecticut, and another brother, who lived in a remote part of the country.. Military: Sergeant 2d Connecticut, 1st January, 1777; Ensign, 29th December, 1777; 2nd Lieutenant 9th April, 1780; transferred to 3d Connecticut 1st January, 1781; retained in Swift’s Connecticut Regiment, June 1783 and served to 3d November, 1783. In addition to the service reported by Heitman, William Lynn, a Private, served in the 6th Company, CoWilliam Lynn’s brother, David Lynn resided at Killingworth, Connecticut, when he enlisted in 1780, and served until December, under Captain Martin Lord, Lieutenant William Lynn (his brother) in Colonel Swift’s Connecticut regiment; 6 months. In 1832 he was sixty-eight years of age and resided in Durham, Connecticut; in 1836, he resided in Warren County, Illinois. David Lynn died 20 August 1840 and is buried in the South Henderson Cemetery, Gladstone, Henderson County, Illinois. William Lynn died sometime before 11 June 1831 when his brother, David Lynn, while living in Durham, Middlesex County, Connecticut, applied for bounty land which was due the . . . . heirs of William Lynn on account of his service in the Revolutionary War and Warrant 1763 for two hundred acres was issued August 24, 1831. According to a statement made by David Lynn in 1832, William Lynn may have died as early as 1792. David Lynn, based upon his personal military service in the Revolution, applied for a pension in 1832. A declaration he made on 15 August 1832, states: The Company to which the said [David] Lynn was attached was commanded by his brother Lieutenant William Lynn of Killingworth . . . It has supposed he has been dead full forty years. In 1831, William Lynn was reported to have left that part of the county [Durham/Killingsworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut] more that forty years before and was then reputed to be dead and that it was believed he never married. The exact date of his death was not given.. References: Connecticut. Adjutant-General’s Office. Record of Service of Connecticut Men In the I. War of the Revolution, II. War of 1812, III. Still a youth at the beginning of the Revolutionary war, he volunteered for military service in 1780 at the age of sixteen in Colonel Herman Swift’s Regiment of the Connecticut Line. His age was not an issue because he served under his elder brother, Lieutenant William Lynn, who was the commanding officer of their company. David served as a private. The company was assigned to secure the large supply depot at Fishkill, New York, and thus David never saw battle. After the war he married Melorah Thompson, and they had nine children. As an old man he followed a son, who had received a grant of land in the Military Tract for his service in the War of 1812, to Illinois. He died August 20, 1840, and is buried in Old South Henderson Cemetery, Gladstone, Illinois.(contributed by jfoster107) image gravestone Francis B. Biographical information compiled by V. Allen Gray.nnecticut 7th Regiment under Col. Charles Webb from 10 July through 18 December 1775_________________________________________________________________________ William Lynn MSA SC 3520-17649 Private, First Maryland Regiment, 1776 maryland gov link Biography: William Lynn enlisted as a private in the Ninth Company of the First Maryland Regiment on January 22, 1776. The regiment was Maryland’s first contingent of full-time, professional soldiers raised to be part of the Continental Army. Many of the men in the company came from Western Maryland, and it was designated as the light infantry company for the regiment. Instead of fighting in a line with the other companies, the light infantry was often deployed in small groups ahead of the main body of troops as scouts or skirmishers. They carried rifles, rather than muskets, and were intended to be a more mobile group. [1] Lynn and the rest of the company were ordered to travel from Frederick to Annapolis in March 1776, to join with the rest of the regiment. As they departed, however, they were instructed to head for Baltimore instead to provide reinforcements in case of an anticipated British attack launched from the HMS Otter, a warship reportedly heading for the city. No attack ever materialized, and the company proceeded to Annapolis. They trained there until July, when the First Maryland Regiment was ordered to march north to New York, to protect the city from invasion by the British. [2] On August 27, 1776, the Americans faced the British Army at the Battle of Brooklyn (sometimes called the Battle of Long Island), the first full-scale engagement of the war. The battle was a rout: the British were able to sneak around the American lines, and the outflanked Americans fled in disarray. As the Maryland troops fought their way towards the American fortifications, they were forced to stop at the swampy Gowanus Creek. Half the regiment was able to cross the creek and escape the battle. However, the rest, including the Ninth Company, were unable to do so before they were attacked by the British. Facing down a much larger, better-trained force, this group of soldiers, today called the “Maryland 400,” mounted a series of daring charges. They held the British at bay for some time before being overrun, at the cost of many lives. [3] The Ninth Company fared poorly at the battle, probably because the light infantry’s role placed them closest to the enemy lines during combat. Fewer than half the men from the Ninth Company escaped death or captivity at the battle, and at least thirteen soldiers were taken prisoner. What happened to Lynn during the battle is not recorded, and nothing else about his life known for certain. It is possible that he served for several years in a rifle regiment commanded by Daniel Morgan. The regiment was raised in the mountains of Virginia, near the region that Lynn’s Maryland unit had come from, and it is conceivable that the Private William Lynn who served between 1777 and 1779 was the same man who had faced the British at the Battle of Brooklyn. Unfortunately, not enough is known about Lynn to be certain.
