Tells about a few days in the life of a simple soldier who goes on vacation to his mother. At the very beginning, the authors report that Alexei Skvortsov will die in the war. The film was watched by more than 30 million Soviet viewers, and in the end it collected more than 100 foreign prizes. Screenwriter Valentin Ezhov and director Grigory Chukhrai were awarded the Lenin Prize. AWARDS: 1960 – participation in the competition program of the Cannes Film Festival, as well as a special jury prize. 1960 – two awards “Golden Gate” of the San Francisco Film Festival: for best film and for best director (Grigory Chukhray). 1960 – David di Donatello Prize for directing (Grigory Chukhrai). 1961 – BAFTA Award for Best Picture, as well as a nomination for Best Foreign Actor (Vladimir Ivashov). 1961 – Bodil Award for Best European Film (Grigory Chukhrai). 1961 – Lenin Prize (Valentin Ezhov, Grigory Chukhrai). 1962 – Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay (Valentin Ezhov, Grigory Chukhrai). A voice-over tells him that he died and was buried in a foreign country. A few years before that. Nineteen-year-old communications officer Alexei, while repairing a telephone cable, knocks out two German tanks from an anti-tank gun accidentally found on the battlefield. The command is going to present him to the Order, but Alexei asks to give him leave to see his mother and repair the roof of the house. After receiving six days off and buying a gift for his mother, Alexei sets off. His colleague Sergei Pavlov asks to pass the news and two pieces of soap to his wife. At the station, he meets Shura again, who decides to wait for him. They go to Pavlov’s wife. It turns out that she lives with another man. Alyosha visits Pavlov’s father in the hospital and gives him soap, telling about his son’s courage and valor. The holiday is coming to an end, and Alyosha has to part with Shura. In farewell, she says that she made up about the groom and now loves him. Without really saying goodbye, Alyosha catches up with the moving train.
