ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Mega-Ultra-Rare Antique Circa Lt. 1890s/Early 1900s Victorian Chromolithograph Depicting the Picturesque Ruins of the Famous 12th Century English Monastery Just Before Sunset with Night Coming Down, titled, “Tintern Abbey” which is located in Monmouthshire on the Welsh bank of the River Wye, England. The scene is after the original 1873 watercolor painting by the renowned listed landscape painter, ‘Edwin Aaron Penley’ (English, 1828-1893), whose printed signature & date, ‘Edwin A. Penley 1873’, appears lower-right in the image corner, and who is sometimes confused with his father, landscape & portrait painter, Aaron Edwin Penley (English, 1807-1870). We currently have another similar chromolithograph by E.A. Penley of the 15th century “Kilchurn Castle” located at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, so please have a look! Chromolitho Info: There is no publisher name printed on the piece. The Chromolitho is on a nice heavier-weight cream-colored & lightly-textured wove paper stock and what’s cool, is that there is a very, very light embossing to some of the details in the scene like the trees, rocks, castle, grasses etc.—the slight embossing is more noticeable from the back of the piece, but not so much from the front just by looking at it unless you’re really looking for it, but you can very slightly feel if you run your fingers across the various elements within the scene. It seems that the Chromolitho may have been framed for a brief time a very, very long time ago (without being matted, glued or taped in) as there appears to be maybe some old cardboard ‘striped’ acidity-burn on the back from likely being cardboard-backed, which does not bleed through to the front at all and is negligible and not really even worth mentioning. The printing location, ‘Made in England’, appears stamped on verso lower-left in the corner which also has the title hand-written in pencil as, ‘Tintern Abbey’ and the artist name, ‘after Penley’ written just below it along with a few extra inventory notes. The title was mis-written and erased before the artist info (as the other chromolitho’s title we have listed) but corrected on our piece. Size & Condition: The sheet size is 17-15/16” x 14-7/8”. The Chromolitho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade at all on this wonderful piece—beautiful rich color & tones! This Chromolitho has been in a drawer amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light-of-day in all this time…It’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original condition, simply stunning & will look beautiful all framed-up! No tears! Very minimal slight, tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are barely noticeable on the back (none noticeable at all in image area on front). No real or significant creasing in the image area at all, but there is extremely minimal tiny creasing here & there along a couple outer edges and small dog-ear bends in a couple corners which aren’t even worth mentioning—all outer edge issues are completely negligible since they can easily be matted & framed out. Negligible/no real or significant toning of the paper stock from age noticeable, especially amidst the cream color of the paper stock itself. This rare chromolitho would make the perfect addition to E.A. Penley or UK castle/abbey/château art collection. What a beauty!
