Painted in the spirit of academic realism, it follows the iconographic model of the artist Ferdo Kikerec from 1879. Undoubtedly Predic’s most famous work, Kosovka Devojka has been widely reproduced and copied. Today, it resides in the Museum of the City of Belgrade.In Kosovka Devojka, Predic depicts the battlefield shortly after the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. The historical scene unfolds in a summer landscape at dawn, as the day begins to break over a field of blooming poppies.At the forefront is a young woman tending to the wounded Serbian hero, Orlovic Pavle, offering him water from a golden chalice. Their faces reveal a profound mixture of seriousness, suffering, and pain, yet also a glimmer of hope. The maiden is dressed in richly embroidered medieval Serbian attire. The golden chalice from which she offers water is of unusual shape, while a second chalice, with a bloodstained towel, sits behind her. Orlovic Pavle, the wounded hero, is dressed in opulent clothing, with an intricately adorned dagger at his belt. His robe, parted at the chest, bears white-embroidered crosses on both sides. His sword, bloodied and broken, lies beneath his feet, with a shield beside him, over which rests the hand of a fallen Turkish soldier, still gripping a blood-stained yatagan. Orlovic’s face is turned toward the sky, while the head of the dead Turk, adorned in gold, faces the earth.To the right of the scene, fallen warriors and two horses are visible—a white horse that lies slain, and a bay horse standing riderless. On the left, a Turkish soldier lies dead, an arrow lodged in his chest.The painting is rich in symbolism and detail, offering layers of interpretation and analysis. Orlovic Pavle was a commander in the Rudnik region and one of Prince Lazar’s most trusted men. According to legend, he was the son of Duke Vuk and a descendant of the famed Duke Grgur Orlovic, with his name tied to the chivalric Order of the Dragon. Through his image, all the heroes of the Battle of Kosovo are represented. The unnamed maiden symbolizes the preserved honor of the homeland and the continuation of life.Kosovka Devojka is not merely a depiction of a historical scene; it represents Predic’s desire to capture his vision of the events on the Kosovo battlefield.
