Item Description KAY Vanguard 2 ~Red Burst~ 1960′s (1960s) Kay (Kay Musical Instrument Company) is a long-established brand that has been manufacturing guitars since 1936. Kay mainly mass-produces student models. It was also sold under brands such as Silvertone and Airline. All of these brands are making the Vizar area lively. However, we also manufactured high-end lines such as the jazz guitarist Bernie Kessel model. In the 1960s, even cheaper Japanese-made guitars were exported in large quantities, which led to its decline. The model is Vanguard 2 manufactured in the 1960s. The “2” means there is also a “1”, giving it a slightly more sophisticated impression than the original Vanguard. Even so, the unique “cuteness” of Visal remains. A single peg is set on the neck, which is fixed with three bolts, and it seems that the design was intended to be closer to the fender. The bridge is equipped with a tremolo unit, and when you open the cover, it is pulled by two powerful springs. It looks simple and well made at first glance, but the tremolo on the tailpiece is in a high position, making it impossible to set the string height low. It is possible to lower the string height by passing the string of the tremolo part from below as a last resort. In that case, the tremolo function will no longer be available. The bridge is a simple piece with a groove cut into a straight cylindrical bar. Because it is a straight bridge, it does not correspond to the radius of the fingerboard at all, and the string height on the 1st and 6th string sides is higher than on the 3rd and 4th strings. This bridge is most likely not original. The bridge itself is not fixed to the body and is simply placed on the body. Currently, the bridge is adjusted to the position of the tremolo unit, but the octave pitch will still be a little sharp. The two single coil pickups are fixed directly to the body and pickguard and cannot be adjusted in height. Adjustments can be made using the pole piece. However, the adjustment range is not that large. The pickup date written on the back of the pickup is “102966”. It is probably from 1966. Since the pot date is relatively close, we can assume that the guitar was completed around 1966-1967. Although it has probably been around 60 years since it was manufactured, it is in relatively good condition. Since the string height is high, I think it would be a good idea to insert a shim between the neck and body to adjust it. There was already one shim in place, but a thicker shim would be better. Vizal guitars have many unique features compared to the familiar Fender and Gibson.
