eBay UNCIRCULATED RELIC Medal 1939 Golden Gate International Expo California ALCOA Aluminum Train Railroad Token 32mm This medal is shiny and uncirculated. Made in 1939 for the Golden Gate Expo by Alcoa, the Aluminum Company of America, it reads “Aluminum in these Famous Trains Furnished by ALCOA.” A great train and railroad theme token from the 1930s. Not sure if this is technically a relic medal unless the aluminum in the medals had been taken from a train. Actual item(s) photographed. Here is some more information on relic coins and medals. About Relic, Imbedded, and Flown Medals and Coins In numismatics, relic medals were once defined as medals made up in part or whole of metal taken from historic sites or objects like enemy cannons, battlefields, and ship propellers. Today, that definition is broader. There are also “witness” relic medals and coins, souvenirs from an important moment in time, or from a journey. This is the coin or medal that was present at an inauguration, or traveled through the Panama Canal at its opening, or was flown to the moon and back. Imbedded coins and medals are another sub-category of relics. In this case, the relic is attached to or imbedded into the coin or medal. Most of the newer ones are legal tender coins. Until a generation ago relic coins were unheard of. Relics were almost always medals. Advances in modern minting technology have made imbedded coin manufacturing possible, and crossover collecting makes it profitable. For example, a coin imbedded with a tiny piece of coal from the Titanic also appeals to collectors of all items associated with the ill-fated luxury liner.
