There were three patterns. The first was made in 1905-1906, the second was made in 1915-1918 and the third was made during WWII. They are typically blued. During 1933-1945 period, Germany used three different marking systems to identify manufacturers. From 1925-1940 a number code were used. From 1937-1940 commercial trademarks were used. From 1940-1945 letter codes were used. This one has a letter code. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good – Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have light scrapes and handling marks, but no notable wear. The finish has started to turn a darker patina color. The two escutcheons securely fasten the panels to the tang. They have strong slots with no signs of tool marks and they have light oxidation. Both wood grip panels have compressions and draglines. The wood has darkened with age and use. The spine, fuller and blade have light handling marks, but no notable wear. The blade has no nicks or dings and appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The original finish is still intact and doesn’t show any signs of patina. There is a layer of cosmoline on the blade. The left side ricasso is marked with the year and secret manufacturer code “42 COF”, the right side blade is marked “4605” and the right side guard is marked with the serial number “8804”. It matches the scabbard! The scabbard is in Very Good – Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and use. The frog stud is securely attached. The mouth, body and finial have light impact marks, scratches and oxidation. Most of the finish still remains. The scabbard frog stud is marked “8804” which matches the bayonet. The body near the mouth is marked with the year and manufacturer “43 ASW” (E.F. Horster, Solingen). This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Mauser k98, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
